Description
White Storks in Strasbourg, France. Storks have long been associated with the Alsace Region because they build their nests here in the Spring and raise their chicks after a long migration from Africa and India where they live in the winter months. Both the male and female will care for the chicks and are protected wildlife in the area.
They are also symbolic of new life, rebirth and good fortune. In fact, you will find images of the birds all over Strasbourg and the Alsace region. In the late 1800's, while the area was under German occupation, a local artist named Hansi derived a campaign using the White Stork and it's uncanny ability to always come home as a symbol that the region would soon return to French rule.
They are beloved birds in the region and you cannot miss the large colonies in the Spring with their huge stick nests atop trees, chimneys, roof tops and other high places. Storks will come back to the same nest for several years and become part of the community.
