Description
There are three inscriptions on the Hotel Zum Ritter in Heidelberg, Germany. You can see them in beautiful gilded lettering.
The first, "Si Iehova non aedificet domum, frustra laborant aedificantes eam" translates to "If God did not build the house, his builders worked in vain."
The second, under the pediment is "Persta invicta, Venus" roughly translated to "Always remain undefeated, beauty."
And the third is "Solos. Deo. Gloria." or "To God Alone be the Honor."
The house was built by Carolus Belier for his wife Franziska in 1592 and has survived fires and wars to still stand today, making it as famous as Heidelberg's prized castle. The Renaissance Facade is full of symbolism and even includes caricatures of the Beliers.
