Description
The lovely Villa Schmidt sits on the banks of the Rhine in Kehl, Germany. It is surrounded by a beautiful park called the Garden of Two Shores and is linked to Strasbourg, France by the Europabruke, or Europe Bridge.
The formal gardens feature a statue of the Haymaker, donated by the former owner of the house, Agnes Schmidt Tick. The original bronze statue was lost sometime during World War II and the statue today was made from the original plaster impression. Agnes Schmidt Trick was heir to the Trick Pulp Factory in Kehl. Agnes and her husband Ludwig resided here until 1944. The house then became the French Military Administration Headquarters until 1992. After that the city of Kehl extensively renovated the property and it is now a protected monument and restaurant.
